Hope 1-6

An installation comprising five freestanding paintings distributed throughout the space, along with three accompanying deckchairs. The setting invites visitors to lie down and bask in the radiance of the paintings, thereby exploring the relationship between reception, projection and healing.

Composed of toxic heavy-metal pigments, the paintings depict clouds, rendered in various techniques and hypnotic geometric forms on coloured nylon fabric. They draw parallels with historical, disillusioned aesthetics of optimism. From ornately framed Baroque altars, through historical seascapes and their horizons, to Colour Field Painting and the batik of the spirit of optimism in the 1960s. The paintings become a toxic therapist, a devouring holiday destination, a false promise of transcendence and salvation.

‘Hope 1–5’ examines how longings, their aesthetic manifestations and the inevitable disappointment that follows shape societies. How do we allow ourselves to be blinded by our own idealisations? How can romanticisation and the disappointment that follows be renegotiated within society?
